Hannukah Link Round-Up

In honor of the last night, here is a collection of everything funny, educational, contrarian, and just weird about Hanukkah. If anyone reading this is a Jewish Chair, you might want to share some of this information with your Chapter.

1) A Beginner’s Guide to Hanukkah:
This is the hilarious Jonathan Safran Foer piece from the New York Times. Go read it. Sample line: “Latkes are a type of oil into which small quantities of potato have been infused.”

2) Chrismastime for the Jews:
A Saturnday Night Life sketch that really captures a lot of the humor of Jewish life on Christmas. It’s by the same guy who does Triumph the Comic Insult Dog.

3) Frequently Asked Questions About Hanukkah:
A basic introduction to the Holiday and what it means.

4) The Naked and the Profane:
Mostly-naked girls with Hanukkah props. The link above takes you to a blog entry that doesn’t actually contain the pictures (although it does have an interesting discussion of whether or not the pictures are appropriate.

5) Kosher Chinese:
An article about Chinese restaurants that have started serving all kosher food so that they can cater to a larger Jewish audience. I don’t know about Chinese food without shrimp or pork though…

6) Classic South Park dreidel song:
I assume you have all seen this before, but it makes me laugh every time I see it. “Jews, they’re really lame. Jews, play stupid games.”

7) Hey Ya Hanukkah:
The classic Hanukkah parody set to the tune of Outkast’s Hay Ya. Funny. It’s actually from last year, but check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.

8) Hanukkah is fundamentalist and bad:
A contrarian argument that the story about the oil burning for 8 days is made up, and the holiday celebrates a bunch of Jews who were fundamentalists and militaristic and not people we should be celebrating. The article is from the JewSchool where I got a bunch of this other stuff.

9) Military history of Hanukkah:
A detailed description of the various battles that culminated with the Jewish rebel army reclaiming the temple from the Syrian/Greeks. For those people who only know of Hanukkah as the oil that burned for 8 days, this is the back story that led up to that point. And might I say, damn do us Jews know how to kick some ass.

10) Hanukkah humor:
A collection of jokes and spoof songs of some of the classic Christian versions (like ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas)

11) Dilbert on Hanukkah:
Scott Adams, the man behind Dilbert offers some brief and misguided comments on what Hanukkah means to him.

12) Festivus:
Since Seinfeld is so popular with the Jews I thought you guys might want some information about the real holiday, as it was invented long before it was featured on Seinfeld.
